Census location query - "Waterloo" , North Tawton
« on: Saturday 01 August 15 09:03 BST (UK) »
Hi Devon Rootschatters,
I have a location name of "Waterloo" , North Tawton, for a relative in the 1871 Census.  I can't find Waterloo as a street address; thinking it's the name of a building?
Cheers,
Meredith

think this page shows the route walked by the census enumerator -- he did "Waterloo" in two parts, firstly before Mill Lane and then again after Church Lane

Thanks, Marmalady. So does this mean "Waterloo" is actually a street name?  I can't find it on current maps of the town.

It could either be a street or the name for an area of the town

"Waterloo" appears on an 1888 map marked over what seems to be an empty field on the south side of the east/west road (present Fore Street) immediately north of the woollen factory and south east of the gasworks about where the giant distribution centre is on the Google Earth edition I looked at.  I'd call it an area of the town.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thank you, MaxD.  That sounds very positive...my ancestor worked in the woollen factory, so maybe it was where the worker's cottages were - in a block rather than along a street frontage.  I'll dig around for that old map.  Thanks for the GPS reading - brilliant!
We hope to visit the village next year, so trying to locate significant sites.
Cheers,

Thankyou Chempat...this map is amazing.  I used the GPS readings from MaxD to find the area as it is now, and thanks to Google Earth, was able to see the old woollen mill buildings.
Now the map link you've provided, answers all my questions.
Thank you so much.

Hello, my birth certificate and patents’ marriage certificate records Waterloo, North Tawton as place of residence in 1942 and 1944. It was in fact the house which was attached to the Gas Works where my Grandfather was gas manager ,
