Maternity home in Malvern
« on: Saturday 01 August 15 09:51 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I'm trying to locate info re: my husband's nan, who was born illegitimately in 1920. Her mother (Daisy) lived in Horncaslte Lincs when she got pregnant, but delivered at a special 'clinic for unmarried women' down in Malvern Worcestershire. Daisy did give the baby up to a family just outside Birmingham.

My questions are threefold: anybody have any info/ideas what this clinic would be called? Why would she have travelled all the way to Malvern to deliver (family shame, perhaps?)? And lastly, since adoption wasn't legal in 1920 how would "adoptions" have been arranged?

Any direction is of course helpful! :)
Thanks
Sarah

Was Daisy a 'young' mum?  About halfway down this page http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/list/MH11.shtml are three homes for young, unmarried and pregnant girls.

Hi Sarah

You need to get in touch with the Malvern Family History Society as they are the most likely to be able to help you with this matter, I cant recall their web address but just try typing their name into GOOGLE & that should find them

Excellent tips and links, thank you!

Daisy was 22 years old when she gave birth, and it was of course just after WWI ended so the movie in my head is saying "soldier father"!

I'll read into these now - much appreciated  :)
