Sargent-major John Pocock
« on: Sunday 02 August 15 06:52 BST (UK) »
This man was my wife's great-grandfather and I'm pretty sure he had children born in India or maybe elsewhere. I already know of several born in the UK (Inverness, for example), but there were at least three - Alexina, Caroline and Magaret - who do not appear to have arrived in Britain!

Anyone who can help me discover where/when these 3 kids entered the world I will be most obliged to.

It would also be very helpful if you knew his regiment as it may then be possible to track his postings.

Good hunting!

John Pocock served with the Highland Rifle Volunteers, 78th Highlanders.
Married Margaret Tulloh nee Brown in the St Thomas's Cathedral, Bombay, India, on the 19th April 1859.
As far as I know, he was born about 1828 in Newbury, Berkshire England.
The three girls about whom I have no birth details about were Alexina, b. about 1864; Margaret b. about 1866 and Caroline b. about 1870.

Per his army record he was in Gibraltar when his discharge was approved in June 1866. He would have gone from there to the regimental depot at Stirling where he was discharged in August 1866, and thence to his intended residence at Inverness. Alexina died at Inverness in 1867.

Alexina is such an unusual name, that I feel confident the birth registration I found before is the correct one! ;D

The 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot, after serving in India during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1858), and then moved to Canada.
Halifax, Nova Scotia until 1871, with a spell in Montreal (1867-1869).

So maybe Caroline was born in Canada?

Caroline was only 6 1/2 months old when she died in August 1870 so I would guess that she was born in Inverness ( Inverness Courier 18 August 1870) where the family had resided since 1866

Alexina was aged 3 1/2 when she died in December 1867 (Inverness Courier 19 December 1867).
