« on: Sunday 02 August 15 09:56 BST (UK) »
For anyone who is a relative of the Men on the Royal Edward lost on the 13th August 1915. Hope its OK to post this here if not please remove.

There will be a commemorative event in Towneley Hall, Burnley, Lancashire on the 13th August 2015 at 7:30pm to mark to sinking of the Troop Ship the Royal Edward with the loss of over 900 lives. The event is open to the public and the organisers are looking for descendants of the East Lancashire Field Ambulances who where on-board the ship.

Sincere thoughts  about the men lost.

I would just like to make a comment about the use of HMT.    There is no official  designation of "HMT"    for troopships.   HMT   usually refers  to His Majestys Trawler, used as minesweepers or Convoy escorts.

Thanks for the reply, from what I understand "Hired Military Transport" but I have also seen HT "Hired Transport" on the Helles Memorial. But no expert.

"Ships Taken up From Trade"      Was the description used during the Falklands Campaign, I believe?

I suppose designations have changed over time then. I include a clip from the South Wales Borderers War Diary also on the Royal Edward which I found rather thought provoking. Aug 1915

By the way, I should add that they want to commemorate everyone who went down on the Royal Edward, if you want to let them know details of your relative.

Below is a list of the men from the East Lancashire Field Ambulances who died on-board the Royal Edward. I have also attached a list from the CWGC of the men who died on the 13 Aug 15 who's names are on the Helles memorial which give service numbers and families for the names below. In the list are 35 Burnley men the others are from across Lancashire. They are doing the event in Burnley since there were quite a few from there.

My Grandfather Dr. Richard Neagle was on HMT Royal Edward. However he survived, swimming for many hours.
