seeking family of Jane Greenfield Billingshurst
« on: Sunday 02 August 15 10:14 BST (UK) »
I know nothing about this lady except she married my gt x3 grandfather Edward Redman in 1804 Billingshurst. He was a widow with 4 small children.

There are a few posts on Edward but this is a different subject. From parish records I have marriage and also that they emigrated 1820 with 7 children (his and Jane's). Edward can be traced in USA also no mention of Jane. I am approaching this from another angle, trying to find her birth and family  first.

On 1841 census Blingshurst (southlands) there are some Greenfield s who could be connected. Edward live in Southland Farm which he inherited from his first wife's family.

In 1831 Edwards son John from first marriage married and one witness was Zephaniah Greenfield. May be a connection.

May be there is someone in here researching this family who may know what happened to Jane.

From the parish record of the marriage - was she a spinster or a widow?

Thanks Chempat.

Zephaniah is an unusual name. It could be that he is brother of Jane Greenfield. Taking the 1841 it would make this one born 1776.

If Jane were 25 when she married Edward 1804 would make her dob 1779. She had her  last child 1815/6. Although her  age is pure guesswork trying to come up with answers. She may have been 40 when she married so dob 1764 and 55 when had last child, is that likely?

I know nothing about this lady and don't know where to look. She emigrated 20 years before first census!

Greenfield is quite a common Sussex surname.
Whilst you may want to build up a picture of what Greenfields there were in the area, I would be cautious of assuming they must have been closely related to your missing Jane. Maybe, but maybe not.

Might be worth trying to ascertain if Jane went to USA with the family or had already died. Once her country of death has been established hopefully a burial can be found which, hopefully, may give an age at death. Then you can think about looking for a birth for her in a more meaningful way.
With no year of birth, I fear just looking for a birth of a Jane Greenfield in Sussex could take you off following a wrongone.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks Liz yes Greenfield is a very common name! Bit like my Redman s and Jupps!

In the parish records it states Edward and 2nd wife Jane and children left for America 1820. Have found passenger lists  an Edward Redman and a Mrs Redman plus 7 children ( sadly Christian names we omitted) left UK and arrived in USA. I can trace Edward and children in USA but no mention of a wife.

I put this search aside and resurrect it every so often. Just in case more info is available. I know it is an impossible task, but won't give in.

I'd think 55 would be pushing it more than somewhat at that time.

In the SFHG Marriage Index both Jane and Edward were recorded as of that parish - Billingshurst

There is a Jane Greenfield baptised 22 Oct 1780 at Billingshurst d/o Arthur and Lucy.  This seems a likely candidate for your Jane, if so these are her sibling's baptism dates:
Elizabeth 5 Mar 1769
Arthur 19 May 1771
Lucy 30 May 1773
Henry 14 May 1775
Thomas 9 Feb 1777
Ann 13 Dec 1778
Noah 26 Jan 1783
Charlotte 16 Aug 1785Jane 22 Oct 1780

Arthur married Lucy Muggridge 28 Dec 1767 at Billingshurst. witnesses Hy Muggridge & Hy Bennett

Arthur buried B/Hurst 2 Feb 1823 79 y/o.  No record for Lucy that I could see.

Caution there is another Jane baptised 19 Mar 1776 who might also be 'your' Jane. Would you like me to research her too?
