If it is only addressed to his mother, should we assume that his father (John) has died between his last sighting on a census and when the postcard was sent?

Familysearch has Charles on 1940 US census, still married to Elsie and they have three teenager daughter. Charles is a Butler in a private residence. The oldest daughter is a stenographer at the British Embassy.

If it is Charles and I concede it is. ( bye Albert ) Then the postcard would be sent to his mother not his wife. His mother is Mrs J Hounsom and John and Sarah ( mother) lived in Leigh St Leigh

Think you are right.  Looks like a typical letter a son would write to his mum…3 lines!  ::) ::) ;D ;D

The Ellis Island site has Charles arriving in new York in 1913. he says he has been in US once before in 1909 for 1 week. He is going to join a friend - Miss Ellen Vezzell, 117 west 21st Street New York. Wonder who she is? His occupation is manservant.

I've found him in 1911, with a very high status employer! And a possible American connection to the family
