Hugh Mclachlan & Catherine ( Muir) Campbelltown
« on: Thursday 06 August 15 11:48 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find where Hugh McLachlan was born. He was married to Catherine Muir born 1824 Saddell on 30 May 1846 in Tobermoroy. I can find her in the Campbelltown census from 1851 but not Hugh who was a fisherman.

Hi Colin it is the correct census because I have James s marriage cert. Hugh and Catherine are his parents. I cannot find Hughs death anywhere hoping it may have his parents on it. It is not helped by the fact the surname keeps being spelt different ways.

The 1851 indicates that Hugh was born in Edinburgh. The most likely 1841 census is below?

1841 - Strongarve of Tobermory, Tobermory, Argyllshire
Hugh   MacLachlan   Male   65   1776   Argyllshire, Scotland
Ann   MacLachlan   Female   60   1781   Argyllshire, Scotland
John   MacLachlan   Male   40   1801   Argyllshire, Scotland
Hugh   MacLachlan   Male   20   1821   Scotland

Thanks again Colin  :) this is the right info for him. Not sure he was born in Edinburgh when his parents and siblings are all from Tobermoroy. I still cant find his death and I am wondering if he being a fisherman may have died at sea don't know where to look.

Can you quote what's on the census you have & what are the names & dates of the children please & where they were born  ???

Annie

ADDED.........Names/year born of all his children including ones not on the census you have but keep them separate if not on census.

Do you have his wife's death as it will say if she's a widow or not. Where & when did she die  ???
Was he still alive on all his kids marriages.......these things will narrow the time frame.
