Hi all.

Thanks for replies. My John Staples born 1854,father also called John and I am almost certain
birth place is BICKER in Lincs. He had already moved up to Yorkshire by 1871 census working as a servant in Settrington near Malton and married in 1876.I am wondering  if he had been registered under a different name or not at all.
                                                    Sandra.

My Great Grand father JOHN STAPLES BORN 1854 in Bicker according to his marriage certificate registered here in Malton n yorks. Can't find him on any census until 1871 when he is living in Settrington Malton.and this states he was born in London. Can anyone help me please?

There is a John Staples born c1854 Islington in the1861 census. RG 9 piece 144 folio 76 page 60
His father is John a boot maker.
This John may need following on the later censuses to eliminate him as a candidate

What is the father's occupation on your John's marriage cert?

Added:-

Birth
September 1/4 1853
John William Staples, reg dist. - Islington  1b/232

Any specific reason why you believe he was born in Bicker, Lincolnshire, when the censuses 1881 to 1911 say Bickley?

Bicker to Settrington is a long way to move (100 miles) - Bickley to Settrington is not (10 miles).

There is a copy of the marriage certificate on Ancestry - http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/18309009/person/18006483864?ssrc=

It gives his father's occupation as Farm Labourer but nothing about his birthplace.

Had another look at Bicker baptisms on Lincs....
There are no illegitimate baptisms for a John 1852-1855, the only thing coming up is the baptism of a John Thorpe son of Pheobe Ouzeman widow on Feb 17 1853, there are later baptisms for children of Edward and Phoebe Staples- so adding 2+2 and getting 5, I looked for a Ou*man/ Staples marriage. Should have looked for John Thorp Ouzman death, he died 1855, so not our fellow. Reason for posting?? Just in case anyone else follows the same path- to hopefully save them some time  8)
