Hello,
I have a John Shaw in my family tree. (I am connected to him via his daughter Harriet Shaw who was born in 1840 in Heywood, Lancashire.)
What I know for certain is that John Shaw appears on the 1851 census (with Harriet, his wife Ann and other children). Here it says he was born in Ashton in about 1816.
I believe I have also traced him on the 1861 and 1871 census. On the 1861 census his birth place is given as Lees.
This is where I get a bit confused.
On the 51 and 61 census records I have for him, his occupation is related to cotton spinning.
I also found an entry for a 71 census for a John Shaw with a wife Ann, born in Lees, but this time his occupation is dealing tea.
This has made me wonder if I have the wrong John Shaw for 71?
I have a baptism record for 22 December 1816 which lists a John Shaw as being baptised at Shaw Holy Trinity church, with the parents James Shaw and Ann Wild.
Until now I've not found a marriage record for my John Shaw, but he must have married around 1840 because his first child, my Harriet, was born in 1840. Although he could have been living in sin I suppose.
I was happy I had all of his details correctly until I got a 'hint' today for a marriage which took place between a John Shaw and an Ann Boden, parents Joseph Shaw and Samuel Boden, in 21 October 1838 in Oldham, St Mary's Lancashire. There is an original image of the entry and it lists his occupation as a spinner. Neither of the father's professions are given so I'm assuming they were unemployed or deceased at the time of the marriage. I can only think this record wasn't available to me before because I don't recall seeing it before today.
It does seem to fit my John Shaw rather nicely. The date of the marriage ties in with the date of his first born child and so does his occupation.
So what do we think Rootschatters? Does this seem like the most likely marriage for him and that the baptism I found is for another John Shaw?
Also as regards the 1871 census how likely is a spinner to become a tea dealer, and was I looking at the wrong John Shaw here?
