Briefly - He joined the South Wales Borderers - 24th Foot in 1806 at the age of nearly 13 with the rank of Drummer and rose to the rank of Sergeant - Birthplace listed as the parish of Bocking, Braintree.   He served 5 years in the Peninsula War and 4 years in the East Indies - Many battles mentioned

He was medically discharged  in 1835 due to general ill health and "a constitution broken down both physically and mentally"  due to his service and described as a good and efficient solder, trustworthy and sober.  Described as 5 ft 9.5 inches Dark Hair, Dark Eyes and Pale Complexion
