Place of birth for John Finlayson 1851 Census aged 56
« on: Sunday 09 August 15 03:46 BST (UK) »
Trying to work out what the place of birth is as shown in the attachment. The 1861 census has him born in Wick but this looks nothing like that.

If it is permitted I could post more of the census record of 1851 if that would help by providing more detail of the writing.

Thanks

Rickey

Thanks Joy - certainly agree on the Caithness but thought the second word was a bit long for Thurso. About the right area though.

Could it be : Shebster ?

Shebster is a small remote hamlet, which lies 7 miles southwest of Thurso, in northern Caithness, Scottish Highlands and is in the Scottish council area of Highland

Definitely Thurso. It looks long as there is a flourish coming out from the o at the end.
