Cardington Lodge, St Aubin - is it still standing?
« on: Sunday 09 August 15 12:22 BST (UK) »
As I am going to be in Jersey in September, I would like to try & find Cardington Lodge, St Aubin (if it still exists).

I have very little information on the exact location other than these snippets:-

"Looking up the hillside (from Le Mont du Boulevard) one can see this house which was built by the Reverend Samuel King and his wife in 1850"

"The Rev Samuel King and his wife came to St Aubin in 1850 and built and lived in Cardington Lodge at the entrance of Noirmont Avenue"

I have not been able to locate Noirmont Avenue and wondered if anyone with local knowledge can assist.

many thanks

Thanks, Cardington House Hotel is a very likely candidate. Struggling to find information but did find that it is Victorian & has 5 bedrooms. It is also roughly in the right place from the sketch on line at the Societe Jersiaise and the location also pretty much fits with the snippets. I believe that Noirmont Avenue may just have been a way of describing the road to Noirmont.

Cardington House is the white house on the left of this link http://www.panoramio.com/photo/35592502?source=wapi&referrer=kh.google.com

I may just poke my nose in the door & see what I can discover.

thanks

It was still "Cardington Lodge" in 1977 - there was an item in the "hatch, match and despatch" column of The Times that mentioned that address.

Just found this note on the Jersey Heritage website, dated 1978

"Photographic slide of the bend on Mont es Tours, with the Somerville Hotel entrance bottom left and Cardington Lodge entrance top right"

Probably game, set & match

Good find - and enjoy your visit.

It was sad to note that the Rev Samuel King, who had the house built in 1850, passed away only 6 years later. His wife died a year later.

The Rev SK was born c1775, his wife Elizabeth Scott 1785. She was the only surviving daughter of Rev Thomas Scott (The Commentator) & my 4 x gg father.

The house was left the Sarah Ann Scott daughter of Benjamin Scott (brother to Elizabeth). in the 1870's she let the house to Henry Joseph Hunt Holdsworth and married him at some point after his wife died.

HJHH was married to an Irish lass in Auckland and had 6 of his 7 children in Hawaii, so he certainly travelled around.

Samuel died in Jersey on 13.12.1856 and whilst I know that Elizabeth died in 1857 I am not certain where. They both had quite a good innings.

SAS's nephew was drowned at St Ouen's Bay, Jersey in 1851.

If I can obtain a freedom pass from the boss I will dive into the SJ for a rummage.
