Peter Finlayson and Jeales/Gills/Giles Waters of Bower
« on: Monday 10 August 15 03:26 BST (UK) »
Howdy, Peter Finlayson is the 5th great grandfather of my wife. His grandson, William (1828 - 1868) came to Australia in 1853.

I'm trying to get some more details on Peter. I have details of births/baptisms for his children William, John, Catharine, David, James, Elizabeth, Jean and Ann but have nothing at all on Peter. They were born between 1789 and 1813. A submitted tree on Family Search has his date of birth as 1762 and his wife's as 1766. I have searched on Scotlands People for Peter marrying but have come up with nothing that fits.

Can anyone help me please with his birth, marriage, death etc details. Also what as his wife's first name? I have attached an extract from John's death certificate which seems to show his mother's name as 'Jeales'?

If you need anything more please let me know. There seem to have been a lot of Finlaysons around Thurso, Bower in the early 1800s.

Thanks
Rickey

Hi Ricky,
Peter and Giles are recorded in the Caithness Monumental Inscriptions pre 1855 (Vol 3) Published by The Scottish Genealogy Society 1992.
Commemorated Halkirk but with some doubt over what the headstone actually read.
Peter is described as "tackman Hoy" died 11.7.18[30?] aged 62, wife given as Gil[lian?] 10.7.1846 aged 71.
Records vary as to Giles' first name as you've found - Gilles, Gil, Julia....
I generally just use Giles.
Granddaughter Giles CAMPBELL is sometimes shown as Julia (1851 census), but that could be just another stab at what it should be !

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=lornahenderson&id=I8943 shows my interest in the family - Donald TAYLOR who married Margaret CAMPBELL is apparently my 3*great great uncle.

The late Angela FINLAYSON thought that Peter's parents might be William FINLAYSON and Cath MANSON in Whitefield -but if she hadn't figured it out, I doubt any of us will. It fits the places they were associated with, but not the Scottish naming pattern.

I would be curious if any descendants have ventured into DNA testing to see if there's any connection, Y-dna or autosomal, with David FINLAYSON's FINLAYSONs (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Finlayson-141)

Hope this helps,
Lorna
