Charles Lamb 1827-1895 Methodist, Cordwainer and Painter
« on: Monday 10 August 15 10:58 BST (UK) »
I'm travelling close to Uttoxeter in a few weeks and want to find Charles Lamb's grave, (if he had a stone, of course) but I'm not sure where he would have been buried. He was definitely a Methodist and his second marriage to Harriet Wood in the 1880s is not recorded in the BMDs, although in the 1891 census they are man and wife. In the 1881 census she was just his servant, but living with him, with her children from a previous marriage, at Chapel Gardens in Uttoxeter.

In that 1891 census, they are living in Spath, just outside Uttoxeter. Is he likely to have been buried in Uttoxeter Cemetery? So would Uttoxeter Council be able to tell me this and do they charge for the privilege?

You could try emailing them info@uttoxetertowncouncil.org.uk Wolverhampton has a bereavements service who will very kindly look up grave sites but I don't know how they deal with this at Uttoxeter

But as my dad always said - if you don't ask you don't get

Just as an update on my research into Charles's second wife, Harriet Wood, I have found her in the 1871 census, living with her parents, unmarried and the mother of three children!! Not unusual, of course, but I was wondering if anyone could confirm that Eliza Wood b 1868, Mary Ann Wood b 1870 and Hannah b 1873 were all baseborn. Their place of birth was given as Kingstone, which was part of the Uttoxeter Reg district.

Thank you for any help given in answering this query.

Charles Lamb appears not to have been buried at Uttoxeter Cem'y - if he was, he has no stone memorial. Perhaps he was buried at a church - or are there any Methodist burial plots elsewhere?
