Michael Phillips born 1837 Galway, Ireland educated in Manchester

The obituary for my ggrandfather, Michael Phillips, in New Zealand states he was educated in Manchester. His father was Thomas Phillips, unsure of mothers name. He was RC.

I know he travelled to Australia, then onto New Zealand in 1862.

I know nothing about this area at all so any help on finding info would be much appreciated.

He might figure on the 1851 census, being about 14 at that time? Have you had a look?

What sort of jobs did he have later in life ?   Might possibly help if the census entry is incorrectly transcribed.

When he first came to NZ he was a shop keeper, then a clerk at the council ending up as County Clerk.
