Ore Road, Hastings, 1861
« on: Wednesday 12 August 15 16:53 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where Ore Road was in the 1850s please, I cant find it on any modern maps nor on the 1875 1:2500 scale Ordnance Survey map.  The 1861 census record for one of my ancestors indicates that he lived at Laura Cottage, Ore Road in the parish of St Mary in the Castle and I'd like to try and find this on the old maps.

Try listing census addresses before & after your "Laura Cottage" and it will help pin it down on maps.

Sometimes the original road gets renamed...

I had tried that but it didn't help, the preceding road is still in existence but in 1861 was part of a new development on the side of East Hill which was isolated from other areas.  Also, looking at the first page of he census book, it seems to have been used as a collection for odds and ends missing in other census books plus the enumerator seems to me to have dodged about a bit after my Ancestor's entry to roads that seem disconnected from one another.  Immediately after my ancestor's entry are a collection of farms with no road names.
Bit frustrating but not unusual in rural type areas as this was at that time.

Found a Laural Cottage? on this map adjacent to Hoads Wood and west of Ore. The road is unnamed

I can see Laurel Cottage, on the 1873 OS map. The lane it is on became St Helen's Road and is now St Helen's Down. Laurel Cottage was on the south side, almost opposite present-day Lyndhurst Avenue, but a little further to the east.

The next property enumerated in 1861 is Old Hole Farm. That is listed in 1871 and 1881 in St Helens Road.

Thanks for the replies.

I was just about the post that the preceding entries to Laura Cottage were in St Mary's Terrace and the following ones for Old Hole Farm and New Hole Farm but you beat me to it ShaunJ - your entries in the 1871 and 1881 censuses have tied it down - I hadn't thought of trying to locate Old Hole Farm in later censuses.   :-\  Funny how sometime you can't see the wood for the trees.

Now I know where it should be I'll have a look at the 1875 1:500 scale OS map and see if Laura Cottage is noted.
