Hi,

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to find out the Regiment or part of the Royal Artillery someone served in if you have their soldier number?

I found this out from the RA records on Ancestry.

Arnold George Revell Soldier number: 1708145

I know he was in Italy. I think he was on the AKAK guns.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I was wondering if there was a way of discovering what section of the RA he would have been in just by the number, but looking around on the internet I don't think that is possible.

After WW1 regimental numbering was replaced by an all-army system.  A soldier's number was issued and stayed with him in whatever unit/corps he served in.
Nanny Jan's suggestion is probably the only way you can find his unit.  The Royal Artillery was HUGE in WW2!

Most likely Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA equipped with 40mm Bofors guns. I expect there were some Heavy AA Regiments with 3.7" AA guns.
Griffiths Llandogo, Mitcheltroy, Mon. and Whitchurch Here (Also Edwards),  18th C., Griffiths FoD 19th Century.

This shouldn't be the end of it. There are people on here who have access to personal records. With a unit number, I can help you some more.

In summary. Unless you have some documentation already that states his unit(s) the only way you will find out what regiments within the Royal Artillery he served with is by obtaining a copy of his service records.

It's also worth pointing out that in many cases soldiering during WW2 was very different from WW1. Many units were disbanded when they were no longer needed and the men transferred to other units that had suffered casualties. As an example my partners grandfather served in three different units between 1939 and 1944. Many Royal Artillery Anti-Aircraft units were disbanded as the Allies gained air supremacy and the men were transferred to Infantry battalions to replace soldiers killed or wounded in previous battles. This was particularly noticeable during the NWE and CMF campaigns.

Service records will give you the foundations to start any serious research - without them you'll not be able to ID the regiments, look at the correct unit war diaries or know where he served overseas.
