Robert PEEBLES death on railway line
« on: Saturday 15 August 15 15:37 BST (UK) »
Robert Peebles, dock labourer, of 9 Dunnikier Place, Kirkcaldy, died on August 16th 1933 of "Multiple Injuries to head, body & arms" "on railway line opposite Hutchison's Den(?)". I would be interested to know if there is a contemporary newspaper article about this accident. Where should I look?

There's a brief item in the Dundee Evening Telegraph for 16 August 1933 - see the (pay per view) site at http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000563/19330816/065/0005. There may be other follow-up articles on the site.

A friend in Canada has kindly identified and forwarded to me articles about the accident from the Dundee Evening Telegraph, the Fife Free Press & Kirkcaldy Guardian and the Dundee Courier.

Apparently Robert had been in the habit of taking a short cut to his work at Kirkcaldy docks from his home at Dunnikier Cottages. He would cross the main railway line to reach the branch line leading to the harbour. On 16th August 1933 he was hit by the 7.29 a.m. mineral train from Thornton to Kirkcaldy. The driver reported having hit something and Robert's decapitated and mutilated body was found lying across the line.

He was a cousin of my great-grandfather James Peebles in Crail.

Hi hdw,

That's good but a very heartbreaking story & horrific death.
Same scenario as my own g/father which made me cry although long gone before I was born.
