Tansley
« on: Saturday 15 August 15 16:00 BST (UK) »
I have started looking into my mums family who are the Tansley's of Basford, Nottinghanshire. I would like to know if anyone has already looked into this family,  my great granddad Robert Tansley seemed to disappear about 1900 and cannot find any trace of him after this time. Any help welcomed thank you

the only Tansleys I can find b Basford are on 1891 census and they are children of Robert Tansley who was born Old Radford Nottinghamshire
They are living in old Basford at the time of the 1891 census - birth registrations would be in Basford reg district

so is this the family??

Robert Tansley Head M 31 Coal Miner New Radford Notts
Eliza A wife 25
Robert son 6
Emily daughter 4
Harry son 2
William son 3months

Eliza A and children all b Old basford Nottinghamshire

If we are looking at the correct family Eliza A is described as widow in 1901 census -the youngest child being a few months old - cannot find a death for Robert though

A 41yo Robert Tansley, husband of Eliza of 79 Mill St, Old Basford, joined the Royal Scots Reserve Regiment on 9 June 1900 and died on 27 July 1900, presumably, as we can't find him on the E/W registers, in Scotland.

just found that record
It states he joined at Derby 9 Jun 1900 and then 10 jun states at Glencross? (little difficult to read) it doesn't state killed in action -just died 27 July 1900 - so presumably in Scotland (as SmallTownGirl suggested)
On papers Robert states born St Marys Parish Nottingham
age on joining 41yrs 5mths
occ Miner
Married
had served in Royal Scots reg -time expired
joined 2nd Royal Scots reserve batallion 9 jun 1900
Height 5 ft 5 and a half inches
weight 142lb
Blues eyes
Dark Brown Hair
Church of England
Tattoo of St Andrews Cross on left forearm

His wife Eliza remarried 1904 to William White

That is very interesting and thank you so much for looking that up for me, it amazes me what he did but I believe marriage may not have been happy.
