Robert Amos 1871 Census
« on: Monday 17 August 15 19:07 BST (UK) »
Hello
Can anyone help to find Robert Amos in the 1871 Census please?

Robert Amos s/o John and Jane Amos (Roberts).
Robert Amos baptised 05.12.1839 Parish of Whitford, Flint

Occ: Miner by Richard Briscoe, Vicar

1841C: Pantasa, Coleshill, Whitford

1861C: Everton, Liverpool
Robert Amos Brother-in-low unmarried 21yrs Seaman b Holywell, Flintshire

I realise that Robert is a Seaman in 1861 Census in Everton, Liverpool, I was hoping that another person on this site has researched Robert Amos from Whitford.

Thank you, marthaannie

Hello CaroleW
I can find no details on Robert Amos after the 1861 Census stating Seaman.
Robert Amos was listed as a witness at his sister's marriage, Harriet Amos to Henry Hardy on 30.05.1860.
Unfortunately, no further information on Robert.
Thank you.

He's still alive in 1869 as he appears on several crew lists around that period. Last seen on board ship called 'Russia'.

and then

THE LONDON GAZETTE, OCTOBER 8, 1869.

Robert Amos, of Derby-road, Bootle, in the county of
Lancaster, Ship Steward, having been adjudged bankrupt

Also see 11 October 1869 - Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser -
It says he was from Bootle so would tie in.

However, his full story covering the last 15 years is in the Liverpool Daily Post 27 November 1869. You need to read that really.

Hello Shep

Thank you, I have checked all the newspaper reports, and if Robert Amos started with the Cunard service as a steward 15yrs ago, he must have gone to sea abt 14yrs of age.

Ship "Russia" with Cunard launched 20.03.1867 58312, I have noted Robert's employment with the ship Russia from 22.07.1867 to 05.04.1869 29yrs, stating birth Withford (Whitford).

Liverpool Daily Post 27.11.1869
Robert Amos ship steward given one week to bring a cash and stock account to Court.

Liverpool Daily Post 09.12.1869
Robert Amos failed to appear in court on set date of 8th December 1869.

I am still unable to find Robert Amos in the 1871 Census.  Did Robert Amos join another ship to avoid appearing in Court on 8th December 1869, unable to find any further trace of him  ???

Thanks for your interest, marthaannie
