Nursing sisters in Wiltshire
« on: Tuesday 18 August 15 17:23 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am trying to understand more about the jobs two sisters had . Different locations but reasonably close.
Mary Elizabeth Hurst ( born 1890) a nurse , gives her address in 1950 as Shipmans,Woodborough Wiltshire and I am wondering if this was a place of work or she was just  lodging there . She latter retires  to Worthing where she dies in 1966. Her sister, again  a nurse gives an address in 1950 as Crane Street Nursing Home ,Salisbury . Not clear what sort of Hospital it was. She also retired to Worthing and died 1973.
Grateful for any information . Thank You .

Have you tried some internet searches of those addresses to see what information is available?

Crane Street appears to have had several possible nursing homes and agencies and this:

Woodborough is a small place, there seems to have been people called Shipman there back in the day so maybe a house named after the family still exists?

Thank you .Yes lots of Shipmans in the area but the internet is not brining up Shipmans --perhaps it a company not a House. The internet searches I Found  for Crane Street Nursing Home don't make clear the type of Hospital--this is 1950. After this  I pick the sisters up in London around  1954 before Worthing.

Crane Street Nursing Home was run by a local surgeon early 1950s where he had his own operating theatre,it then became a part of Salisbury Infirmary.Building was used as the PTS for student nurses for some years.I was a student nurse there, started SRN training in October 1959,and lived in.
The building is now in flats I believe, lovely position opposite Elizabeth Gardens with Cathedral views.
Salisbury Infirmary in Fisherton Street, closed, now new housing, with the old main building in flats for the elderly.
Salisbury Library will have more information.   Brionne.
