Uniform identification help please
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 10:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,

This is my hubby's Grandfather. We know he served in the inter-war period as well as during WWII and we have the forms to send off for his military records. I just wondered if anyone recognised his uniform in this picture? My Father in law thinks from memory and his cap that he may have served in the Prince of Wales regiment (?) at some point.

Thank you :)

I think it's the South Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales Volunteers). Formed by amalgamation of 40th and 82nd Regiments 1881. Initial title was Prince of Wales Volunteers (South Lancashire. Regiment). Amalgamated into Lancashire Regiment 1958. 2nd Battalion served in South Africa, Madagascar, India and Burma during WWII. 7th Battalion was in India.

The sphynx badge related to the 40th at Battle of Alexandria in 1801.

Thank you, some of those places have been mentioned in conversation, although we were under the impression that they were not during war time. All will become clear when his records though.
