Whittlesey 1859-1863
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 23:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I wondered if anyone has access to Whittlesey registers (more likely to be St Andrews than St Marys) who could check the addresses on the following entries please:
23 Jan 1859 Sarah Whitehead to William and Elizabeth
1861 Elizabeth to the above
21 February 1861 John to the above.
I'm not sure if these are birth or baptism dates.  I suspect the addresses will be either Horsegate or Peterborough End.
Thanks for any help
Carolyn

Hi

If you check freebmd they are birthyears and Whittlesey is the registration district.  I think John was 1863

Hi Carole,
Yes, my mistake.  It is 1863, not 1861.  Thanks for pointing that out

Hello Margaret,
Thank you for looking for this information on my behalf.  Does your source include the addresses?  I'm trying to ascertain when William and Elizabeth (nee Scotney) moved from Horsegate to Peterborough End.  They were on Horsegate when they married in 1857 and at Peterborough End in July 1864 when little Elizabeth died, but I'm wondering when they moved from Horsegate.  I suspect the occupation is a transcription error for Selina, as William was an ag lab through and through.  Interesting.  I didn't have baby Elizabeth's full date, so I was pleased to get that.  She died aged 3 of scarlatina.  Thanks also for confirming the dates as being baptismal dates.

John Stallebrass was the illegitimate father of William Whitehead.  William's mother Elizabeth Whitehead had three children by John (Mary 1832, Sarah c 1834 and William 1837, before he departed for Stanground and married a Caroline Parsons, starting a parallel family with her, one of their sons also being named William.  This ties in with a family story that Elizabeth was expecting to marry but was badly let down.  She did marry eventually (following another illegitimate child in 1849 by a Thomas Cheshire!) but it looks as if her husband eventually committed suicide by slitting his throat with a razor.  What tragic stories we uncover.

Thanks again
