Ruby Mary SWAIN
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 23:49 BST (UK) »
I am looking for my great grandmother, Ruby Mary SWAIN. I haven't been able to find a record of her birth and she doesn't appear until she marries Hercules Henry Burke.

As far as I know Cecilia Margeret LiNDHOLD (Cecilie Margrethe) is her mother and Fredrick SWAIN her father. However, she may have been born during a period that Cecilia abandoned Fred but before their divorce so Ruby Mary may not be the daughter of Fred. As Cecilia was still married and still had the SWAIN name, this could be the reason Ruby Mary took that name.

The information I have for Ruby Mary SWAIN:
Born: 21 Nov 1891, New South Wales, Australia
Died: 21 May 1972, Burwood NSW, Australia
Married: 27 Nov 1912 to Hercules Henry Burke
Mother: Cecilia Margaret Lindhold
Father: Fredrick Swain

Hi tigerprawn

This new request is of course carried over from your recent thread seeking information for Frederick SWAIN and his wife Cecilia Margaret, nee LINDHOLD / Lindholt.

Quite a few of the RootsChatters responding to the previous thread, have already searched in vain for the New Zealand birth registration of Ruby Mary.
For my own part this included using NZ BDM (online) plus the NZ Birth index (@ ancestry) and working through all the "Ruby (and Rubie) names" + "Mary" /  + births registered in or near Invercargill (+ all of NZ) etc. etc. for a period of 5 years either side of the supposed birth year of Ruby.     I was able to eliminate all of those I determined might have been possibilities.

I'd also given you information (which came from a number of online "trees"), that said "Ruby" was born in "Invercargill, New Zealand".     Certainly, it's always wise to treat information found in online trees, with great caution.    Whether the information about Ruby's birthplace being Invercargill is correct, is unknown.   It may be pure guesswork by the other researchers of this family ... or, somebody may have documentation which confirms this.

I am looking for my great grandmother, Ruby Mary SWAIN. I haven't been able to find a record of her birth and she doesn't appear until she marries Hercules Henry Burke.

The information I have for Ruby Mary SWAIN:
Born: 21 Nov 1891, New South Wales, Australia

Now curious as to why you have the above, stating Ruby was born in "New South Wales, Australia???

*  Can you tell us please, the source you have for Ruby's birth information ??

Yes, I saw this entry when looking for Ruby SWAIN's marriage details and wondered whether that was where the 1891 birth date may have originated. Ruby R SWAIN married James S Daly in Sydney in 1916, so definitely a different person.

Just wanted to point out that the above article contains a typographical error relating to the year [has 1899 rather than 1889.

The Writ of Summons Notice was also published in >

"Evening Post" (Wellington) - 15 March 1907 - page 6 -- column 2

... Frederick SWAIN  .... on the ground that on or about the month of June, 1889 ...

Please note also that the names of parties in this divorce petition are shown as "Frederick SWAIN and Cecilia Margaret SWAIN (not Caecilie Margarethe Lindholt / Frederic SWAIN ).

Hi TigerPrawn,
Sorry I can't help with any info about Ruby, but we're probably related because she was my grandmother. I was born 4 years after Ruby's husband Hercules Henry died. His gravestone is about 20 minutes drive from where I live. I've always been curious to know more about Ruby but as you've found out there seems to be very little information available. I have some distant memories of her from my childhood and a few photos.
kind regards, Rod
