Robert Whitehead, born in Swavesey
« on: Thursday 20 August 15 10:30 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Robert Whitehead was born about 1796 in Swavesey. He later lived in Brampton and Yaxley, in Huntingdonshire. I've found lots of christenings of Whiteheads in Swavesey on familysearch, but nothing for Robert. From his marriage certificate, his father's name is Thomas.

I've also found a William Whitehead born about 1793 in Swavesey, who later lived in Histon. I've not found a christening for him either. He possibly had a son Robert born about 1814, so I'm wondering if he could be a brother of my Robert, and named his son after him?

Any information about Whiteheads from Swavesey would be much appreciated!

I’m not able to answer the question of Robert’s birth in Swaversy but I have found a few bits that might be of interest?

1841 Brampton, Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire (All born Huntingdonshire, except Robert)
Robert a Publican & Farmer with his wife Mary Ann & Five children.

I was not able to find Robert or Mary Ann in 1851 but I did find 3 of the children.
I presume Mary Ann died as Robert married Elizabeth (Betsy) Toon in 1855.

Thanks Colin
I'd already found the censuses for Robert, but I hadn't seen the marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth. I imagine they could be Robert's parents.
I wonder why we haven't found Robert's baptism.... it seems there are a lot fewer baptisms in Swavesey in the 1790s compared to the 1780s, so maybe the transcribed records are incomplete?

It could be because the record did not survive, or two other possibilities to consider, by the time of James burial in 1796 his father was a pauper, so could he afford another baptism?

The other thought is was Robert the son of Thomas junior baptised 1777?
Where did he marry, was Robert born elsewhere, as far as I can see the only time he mentions Swavesey is on the 1861 census?

I've found Robert on the 1851 census too; his birthplace is "Swasey" which I assume is a mis-heard version of Swavesey.
I haven't yet been able to find Robert's marriage to Mary Ann. Her birthplace on the 1851 census is Huntingdon. Their son Thomas was born about 1822 in Buckden, Huntingdonshire. They were probably living in Brampton, Huntingdonshire by the time son Robert was born in about 1832, and were still living there are the time of the 1851 census.
I imagine Robert had moved away from Swavesey by the time he married Mary Ann, but so far have not found their marriage.

Thanks, I'd already found the marriage to Betsy Toon, this is how I know Robert's father's name. It was a second marriage after the death of his (first?) wife Mary Ann.

Robert Whitehead marriages in Buckden:
1817 to Elizabeth Spendlove
1823 Robert widower to Mary Harrison

So his marriage to Loony Toon was his third.
