Elizabeth Whitehead age 32 was buried in Buckden in 1823. If Thomas was born in 1822 then Elizabeth would seem to be his mother rather than Mary, but you need to check Buckden parish register to confirm exactly who his mother was.

They were probably living in Brampton, Huntingdonshire by the time son Robert was born in about 1832, and were still living there are the time of the 1851 census.

No! In 1851 they were living in Holme, Hunts. And Mary is enumerated as plain Mary which fits in with the 1823 marriage.

Thanks David, it sounds like this could be my Robert.
Where do you have access to the parish records for Buckden? I haven't been able to find them online. It would be good to find christening records for Robert's children - in 1841 he is living with Thomas, Elizabeth and Mary (all 15), William (age 11) and Robert (age 8 ), the youngest two were possibly born in Brampton not Buckden.

The majority of Hunts parish records aren't online as the LDS was refused permission to film them. Hunts FHS has a CDrom available for Buckden, or you can go to Huntingdon Archives.

The marriages come from Hunts Marriage Index which covers all of Hunts, but there is no Hunts Baptism Index, the more's the pity!

In 1841 ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 below so 15 covered an age range of 15 to 19.

Aaargh, if only there was a Hunts baptism index, that would help a great deal!
I would guess that Robert's son Thomas was from his marriage to Elizabeth (and there may have been more children from this marriage), and the younger children were from his marriage to Mary.
I don't know what happened to daughters Elizabeth and Mary, because I can't be sure of their exact age and birthplace (like you said, I assumed they weren't all 15 at the time of the census, probably 19 17 and 15 or something like that).

These could also be his children:
William born 1818 buried 1818 Buckden
Jane born 1828 buried 1828 Brampton

Several mysteries remain, and I think a trip to the record office is the only way to unravel them! I still haven't confirmed when/where Robert's wife Mary died - some time between 1851 (when they lived in Holme) and his marriage to Betsy Toon in 1855.

(Edit - made a typo in an earlier message, Robert was in Brampton in 1841 and Holme in 1851)

That's great Margaret! Do you also have the records for Brampton? (long shot, but would be great!)

What I would like to find out is:
Any children of Robert Whitehead christened in Buckden, probably 1817 onwards
Any more information about Robert Whitehead's marriages in 1817 and 1823, particularly his residence at the time of marriage, and any witnesses

Thanks so much!

That's fantastic. I'd really appreciate it if you could find any Whiteheads baptised in Brampton and Buckden between 1817 and 1841. Particularly Robert, born about 1832 in Brampton.

Just out of interest, Robert born 1832 is my 3xgreat grandfather. He and his wife Betsy both lived well into their 80s. Sadly I don't have any photos of them, but I have some of their children, especially my 2xgreat grandmother Priscilla, their third daughter.
