Thanks for everyone's help. It's particularly interesting to know about the laws regarding non-conformist marriages.

I'd like to know more about Charlotte Clouter (nee Seager). Is there a christening for her? I'm assuming she was widowed by the 1841 census... she's living with the Smith family - Wm born 1792 and Elizabeth born 1795. Maybe she was their servant, or a lodger, or they could be related.
If anyone can find any christenings for Seagers in the Bristol area it would be great, as I can't find any on familysearch.

Thanks - maybe Robert Seager was Charlotte Seager's father? This might explain why the name was used again a couple of generations later. It wasn't one of the most common names at the time, but not particularly unusual.

I'm not familiar with Bristol, but I guess since Robert Seager was from the parish of St Philip, where Charlotte Seager married, it's likely they were from the same part of town.

(P.S. If Robert is indeed my ancestor, I'd glad he was found not guilty ;))

Looking at the Index of Bristol Wills on the net

There is the Will of Stephen SEAGER 1845 - so he should be on the 1841 census

Remember in 1841 the Charlotte Seager that Osprey found, if correct, was listed as not born in Gloucestershire :)

I think this is the Stephen Seager who died in 1845 - listed as a publican and not born in County

1841 - Pile Street St Mary Redcliff Bristol
Stephen    Seager 57 Publican
Ester Seager 56 Somerset, England
Harriet Price 14    FS

I've looked at all Seagers in the Bristol area on familysearch, and there seem to be a lot of Stephens, so I guess the name is another family tradition.
Still not sure how they're connected to my Seagers, but it's of interest....

I guess if Charlotte Seager was not born in Gloucestershire, it's going to be hard to find her origins.

there's another possible Robert in the family. In the non-conformist records, there's the burial of A Robert Cloutter aged 44 21 May 1807 in the Lewins Mead Burial Ground. Also, a Sarah Clouter aged 66 buried 25 Nov 1821 in Lewins Mead, who would be possibles for the parents of James.

Robert Clouter married Sarah Lamb 20 Oct 1788, St James, Bristol
