Charles Ephraim MACHIN - born Q June 1860 but when and where did he die?
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 06:24 BST (UK) »
Charles Ephraim MACHIN was born in the quarter ending June 1860 in Coventry, Warwickshire.

I have found many references to him as a Theatre Manager at the turn of the century, but then the trail is not so easy to follow.

The last reference I have found is in 1920 when he is listed on passenger documents of his daughter Amy Beryl Muriel Machin (born 1896) as father, Mr C E Machin of 259 Clapham Road, London SW9 (which is why I've posted this in London and Middlesex).

He may have married Mary Gertrude Whitmore in the June quarter of 1909.

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks

I take it you have him in the 1901 census?

Do you have him in 1911? I'm finding him a bit elusive.

If they are together in 1911 this will obviously tell you whether or not he married Mary between 1901 and 1911.

Marriage was in Horsham in 1909
Birth, June qtr 1910 Horsham 2b 295
Machin, Olga Mary A

Looks like Olga married in Lambeth in 1933 and earlier she was listed with Gertrude Mary Machin in Clapham Road on the electoral registers

Looking at those electorals this looks the likeliest death for Charles
June 1930 Lambeth 1d 235
Machin, Charles E.
age 65

I think there was a bit of an age gap between Charles and Mary Gertrude, perhaps he told her he was a few years younger than he was.

Things moved on considerably since I started writing this  :)

From presumably your tree on Ancestry you have him as a Hotel proprietor in Ware, Herts in 1911. However, according to the Pub History site, he didn't make his mark there

1911 Census states ages of 47 and 27 so presumably she knew  ;D

In an item headed "Pioneer Films", The Sunderland Daily Echo, 5 Apr 1935, refers to -
"Mr P Craig was subsequently manager of the Avenue Theatre, for some years under the proprietor, then the late Charles Machin"

Hi KGarrad

If you look at the Ancestry tree of richardpj1 you'll see he has that (not hanes' find though). Says he's in California so presumably currently asleep

There's still a gap on what happened to Amy Beryl Muriel ...

Incidentally, the page with Machin  doesn't seem to have been indexed on Ancestry so Charles doesn't appear as a candidate for the Horsham marriage

FindMyPast's MarriageFinder TM found it though
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH

Good morning everybody. Yes, I am in California and you found my tree which has many of his relatives already.

Thanks for all your input.

It appears that C E Machin no longer used or was not referred to as Charles EPHRAIM Machin after the beginning of the 1900s, which makes him difficult to trace.

The 1930 Lambeth death record looks the most likely at the moment, but he would have been 70 in 1930 rather than 65. The FreeBMD index doesn't throw up any more obvious candidates. I may have to purchase the certificate to get the confirmation.
