George Alder Stratford
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 12:14 BST (UK) »
George Alder Stratford, we know he married 2 times....the first 2 marriages in Bristol, Gloucestershire, 1st to Sarah Fisher in 1829 (she died somewhere around 1833), 2nd to Sarah Merrett in 1834 (she died somewhere around 1836) - presumably both wives died in Bristol.

the 3rd marriage to Mary Ann Hollingshead (she is listed as Hollingsworth on the marriage record, an error) in Sep 1841, less than 2 weeks later they were on a ship bound for Wellington, New Zealand.

I need some help in trying to find George on the 1841 census and also a birth or baptism - all we know is that one of the marriages his father John Stratford is listed as a "Man Cook". we think George was born sometime around 1807 (although records in NZ say 1807 or 1809). the unusual middle name, was this a mother or grandmothers maiden name?

Any help would be more than appreciated by descendants in both New Zealand and the USA.

cheers
Richard

Why do you think Hollingsworth is incorrect? She has signed this herself on the marriage record?

LOL subsequent generations, including one of her own children have the middle name Hollingshead or Hollinshead, no Hollingsworth's to be seen :)

Hi Richard,

You may already know this but on the marriage certificate Mary Ann signs herself as a "Hollingsworth"
but to confuse to everyone, it looks like she was baptised as Hollingshead 24-9-1821 (Born 2-9-1821) in St.Andrew, Holborn, London,  Middx  (d/o William & Margaret) same day as her brother William Edward (born 17-7-1817).

Have had no luck in finding a 1841 census for George Stratford.

thanks Alan, yep we already had that info on Mary Ann and William's baptisms, this confirmed their parents as being William Hollingshead (1794-1834) and Margaret Dearman (1785-1826), oddly it took until her 9th of 10th child before Mary Ann named a son William after her brother and father :)
