Please let us know the results.
I think I did see a baptism with a father Thomas so it could work out. The certificate will hopefully tell us.

I now have the marriage cert for Charles William Barker and Sarah Hams and that says his father Thomas was a Commercial Clerk--and that does seem to tie in with his brother James. Sarahs father was a Pocket book maker .Address given by both parties is 11 Portland Street Walworth.
A witness on James marriage in 1857 is a Thomas Baker but that could be his brother and not his father . I can not find Thomas the father on any census return and think--if we have the correct family that he must have died around 1840.  But cant find his death. Would also have expected the marriage certs to say he was deceased .
Confusing .

Thanks . I am wondering if this is one Barker Family or two. Doesn't help that names are the same .  Going back to earlier posts I can confirm that the family I am tracing is Charles William Barker who marries twice. First Emily Alice Shearing 22 Aug 1877 and second Phoebe Callaway 10 March 1889. But Labourer makes more sense . Tree on line if that helps .

hello again.  I now wonder if the 1841 census is the correct one and if it is ,where is the father --if we can find him that may clear things up. Decided to follow the trail of Thomas  Henry Brown Barker and he marries twice . First to Mary Anne Sophia Winter on 17 June 1855--his fathers occupation given as a Clerk--so 3 sons certs all say the same thing . So this is looking more and more as if we have the correct family but some things still don't seem to add up . Labourer--to Clerk . Good Progress . Thomas Henry marries a second time 23 May 1886 to a Mary Sarah Plimmeri . On this cert it says his father is a Clerk but now deceased .

I'm not certain what a mercantile clerk was back then, but it could be that he dealt with accounts rather than letter writing.  So not so much of a jump up.

I'm assuming this is his marriage:

1828  Newington  to Mary Ann Ball Oxenham

So not his signature on James' marriage.
