Underwood - Melbourne
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 22:15 BST (UK) »
I have been researching a Joan B G Newman whose birth was registered 1918 Islington London England. She married an Arthur V C Underwood 1948 Harrow. Arthur's birth was registered 1911 Romford. Arthur Underwood travelling with Joan B G departed London 20 Jan 1949 on board RANCHI bound for Melbourne.Find a Grave has an Arthur Victor Claude Underwood death 24 Nov 1996 with burial Fawkner,Moreland City. Also Joan Beatrice Gillett Underwood died 17 Mar1993 and buried Fawkner.
Is there any way to tie my Arthur V C and Joan B G to the Fawkner burials? I am assuming they are the same but---

Hi edCan,
This couple lived in the Coburg and Brunswick areas according to the available electoral Rolls.
There is not much to confirm they are your couple as registrations of deaths -showing parents etc.- are only publically available to 1985 in Victoria.

1949 and1954
12 Daphne St Coburg.
UNDERWOOD, Arthur, Victor C. Driver
UNDERWOOD, Joan Beatrice G. HD

1968, 1972, 1980
23 Galtes Cres. West Brunswick
UNDERWOOD, Arthur, Victor C. Clerk
UNDERWOOD, Joan Beatrice G. HD

A picture of the Daphne Street house is viewable on Google maps (Aust) using street view

Details from the Fawkner Cemetery/Crematorium database show both were cremated and ashes collected.

A fairly distinctive collection of names there Ed.  :) It does look likely that they are your couple.

Would there be any merit in trying to find and contact living descendants who you may be able to compare notes with?

No others of the surname are listed at the same address as Arthur and Joan on the Electoral Rolls.

Two sets of 4 initials that  line up for each is why I think they are probably mine. No idea whether or not if there were children. Since Joan died first I am not too sure if Arthur would have written an obit.
