Wellington burial
« on: Thursday 27 August 15 17:41 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
Can someone help with a burial in the Wellington area please ?
Richard Colley was bap. 16.02.1794 to Richard and Elizabeth in Wellington.
His brother John and father Richard moved to Pensnett and died and were buried there but I have never been able to find Richard.
I am wondering if he died young and hence buried in Wellington.
Any help finding him greatly appreciated - I cannot find an appropriate marriage for him.
Regards
robsdad

Shropshire burial records on findmypast have Richard Colley born 1790 buried 1795 All Saints Wellington. I've not looked at the image but maybe he was aged 5 months and it has been mistranscribed, or alternatively he was 4 years old at the time of his baptism. Or it could be a different Richard, but I can't find a christening around 1790.

No the entry was as I put aged 5.  Out of approx 80 entries only 7 had 'years'  written after.  It would appear from that page and following pages that no age was written for any child under 2 it just stated infant.

Richard Colley bapt 16/2/1794 ,son of Richard Colley and Elizabeth Chalonia married Catherine Purcell 9/6/1818 in Dawley Magna. They had 4 children Martha b 1819,Thomas born 1821,John born 1824 and Samuel born 1828 all in Dawley Magna.John is my husbands direct ancestor. From this time the family seem to stay in the Dawley area for a couple of generations. In 1841 they live at Langley Row Dawley. In 1851 they live at Well lane Dawley.By 1871 it would appear that Catherine is a widow and living with son Samuel (who is unmarried) in Rednal Lane Dawley.By 1881 Catherine is also dead

Hi Skala,
Thanks for that as I wondered why Richard jnr. was not in Pensnett with his father etc.
Cannot yet satisfy myself about his mother as Richard married Elizabeth Challonia in 1788 in Madeley and first born was Jacob in Dec.1788 then Isacc in 1791 who died 1793 in Madeley ( note his name on familysearch given as Isacc Challoner Colley so definite Challoner connection.
However an Elizabeth Colley died in Madeley 1792 described as a 'woman' not a child and following closely Isacc birth I feel this may have been Elizabeth Challoner, Isacc subsequently died 1793 the following year.
I have juggled with this problem for years and think there may have been a second Elizabeth who with Richard snr. produced a second family in Wellington and later Wombridge starting with your Richard in 1794 ?
I hope you follow my logic.
An Elizabeth was on 1821 Wellington Parish census at Ragfield with Richard and their last three daughters - Elizabeth, Jane & Margaret her age was 55
ie D O B 1766.  I cannot to date find an Elizabeth Challoner born that year.
Regards,
robsdad

I have Elizabeth died 1840 Wellington Shropshire Jan/March qtr ref18/170and husband Richard died July 1856 buried St Marks church Pensett (gravestone)think he was living at Shutt End Kingswinford and was a stone miner. Are you descended from Richard born 1794 and Catherine Purcell? My husband descends from their son John born 1824 Dawley Magna and his wife Jane Owen. Their son Thomas born 1844 married Maria Jones who had three children dying in childbirth with the third child. their son John Frederick Walter(depending what day it was he kept changing his name)was my husband also Tom's Grandfather. When Maria Jones died Thomas married again to Emma Tripass and had 7 more children. Would be interested to hear where your line fit into this tree Many Thanks Skala.
