William SPINKS marriages in Downham Reg Dist 1844-1845
« on: Thursday 27 August 15 19:19 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have easy access to the parish records of this district to confirm that a William SPINKS marries a Susan/Susannah INGLEBRIGHT in  Dec qtr 1845.
A William SPINKS marries an unknown in Downham Reg Dist Sept qtr 1844.
The plot thickens as there are 2 Sarah Ann's baptised in Stoke Ferry, possibly the place of one of the marriages, one 10-1-1847 to William and Susanna SPINKS, and the other one 2-1-1848 to William and Susan SPINKS. The bapt could be of the same child, one private one public.
neither marriages are on freeREG or IGI, the bapts on freeREG.
The family of a William and Susan  (b Shipdham) appears on  various census returns to build up a family picture. Not sure about the other William at the moment.

Dont know if this helps, but here is the Stoke Ferry couple

1851
Stoke Ferry
William Spinks 25 labourer bn Stoke ferry
Susan 26 bn Shipenham
Sarah 3
William 2
George 2 mths. Children bn Stoke Ferry

As to births, I see there are two birth regs for SarahSpinks in Downham reg district, Jan/Feb/Mar and also Oct/Nov/dec 1847. Both Sarah Ann.
So there were two children.

There are also 2 deaths , one in Jan/Feb/Mar and one in Jul/Aug/Sep 1847

So the OND birth must be the one who survives. I guess the JFM birth is one of the above deaths. The other death could be an older generation.

So I would say that both Sarah christenings belong to the Stoke Ferry couple, first one died. They had another baby 10 mths or so later, also called Sarah Ann.

Really need certs or to look closely at PRs to be sure

Thank you for the 1851 census return, they do appear on the later census  records, but not two families. I felt that as the Downham Reg district covers over 4O parishes , and the SPINKS name is not uncommon in this region , it could well be the case that another birth is registered in one of the 40 parishes , but I acknowledge the possibility that you suggest.

Family Search has the following marriages in Wretton
William Spinks and Margarett Mears 4 Sept 1844
William Spinks and Susan Inglebright 30 Nov 1845

unfortunately the Marriage PR's for Wretton for these dates are still held by the Church.

The two baptisms for Sarah Ann at Stoke Ferry are both to William and Susan Spinks  but the one dated 2 Jan 1848 has a note "Baptised at Wretton Church" but I cannot find the baptism in the PR's

Thank you Yokel, that is strange, as I checked the IGI site the other day, but immediately found them after your post.
This does answer the immediate issue about the marriages, and confirms ONE William and Susan, their Banns record is available on the PR under Wretton images 21 and 22, and both tie up with the marriage.
My understanding is that Wretton was used by the Stoke Ferry parish for a period of time, so perhaps the two bapts are for that reason, if the couple specifically wanted her bapt in their church.
The entries are signed by the same clerk, and other couples don't appear to have 2 bapts.

Just found the full details of the children of William and Sarah in Stoke Ferry
Sarah Ann bapt 10-1-1847 buried 14-3-1847 age 14w
Sarah ann bapt 2-1-1848
David William bapt 3-3-1849
George bapt 2-2-1851 buried 20-8-1852 aged 1
George bapt 17-10-1852 buried 8-3-1860 aged 7 diphtheria
John bapt 26-2-1854 buried 19-4-1860 aged 6
Emma bapt 20-1-1856 buried 22-3-1860 aged 4
Susan bapt 22-8-1858 buried 15-4-1860 aged 1
Arthur bapt 1-1-1860
Emma bapt 4-5-1862
George bapt 4-9-1864
John bapt 6-5-1866
Susan Lydia bapt 17-1-1868

This certainly ties up with the birth and death records for Downham Reg Dist, I accept there are 40 parishes in this District.
