Northamptonshire 1851 Census CD-ROM Wanted
« on: Friday 28 August 15 10:35 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Although the censuses are indexed online (e.g. findmypast or ancestry),
the quality of transcription tends to be inferior to the indexes produced
by local family history societies.

Unfortunately the CD ROM produced by the Northamptonshire FHS
is no longer available (I recently contacted them).

Does anyone have a copy they are willing to sell?

I am trying to build up a collection of 1851 census indexes compiled by
family history societies for the whole of England & Wales (and perhaps
Scotland).  I already have quite a few.

Many thanks indeed.

Regards
James

Hi James,
I can't help you out with a copy of the Northamptonshire FHS 1851 Census returns, but I do know that Gloucestershire FHS have a special offer of a CD of the Gloucestershire FHS 1851 Census and full transcription for Gloucestershire. It's priced at £10 + £2 p&p.

Thanks guys.

Hi David, the one from S&N (genealogysupplies) is a copy of the actual census images rather than a transcript.  I am looking for a transcript/index so I can find information quickly  ;)

Hi Victor, I went to the Gloucester FHS site and shop but could not find it listed.  Is it perhaps out of stock?

Hello James....You may be in luck;

I am librarian of Bedfordshire Family History Society and we had that in our reference section for use with an old laptop which has not functioned for years. The CDs have not been used since and hopefully are in a box in our store cupboard. Although they have not been used for a good while, I am assuming they are still there and readable.

1851 Census Index Northamptonshire by Northants FHS (2003) £15.75)

We also have....
1851 Census Buckinghamshire transcript with Index by Bucks FHS (2002) £10.50
1851 Census Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely (transcript) by Cambs FHS (2002) £25.50
1851 Census Hertfordshire (transcript)   by Herts FHS (2005) £19.00
...plus if you're interested...
1851 Census Devon, Norfolk and Warwick (transcript) by LDS (1997) £5.95

The year in brackets is the year of copyright and the amount shown is what we paid for them way over 10 years ago. If you would like to make me (or rather Beds FHS) a sensible offer for the Northants CD and maybe any of the others then do get back to me. Our next meeting is on Friday 11th Sept and is the earliest I can check that the CD is still in the box and is still usable.

Regards

Hi James,
I've emailed the GFHS computer man and asked him if this CD is still available. I'll get back to you after I get his reply.
