Mary Mullin 1838, Collagh, Meelick. Maiden name?
« on: Friday 28 August 15 12:23 BST (UK) »
Mary Mullin/ Mullen born about 1838 , wife of Michael, appears on the 1901 & 1911 census at the same address in Collagh, Meelick, County Mayo.
Their daughter Norah Mullin born about 1877, married John McLoughlin in Castlebar on the 14 Nov 1897.
I have been unable to find a marriage record for Michael and Mary or a definitive birth record for Norah.
I am trying to find Mary's maiden name and marriage record in order to find the fathers of the couple and move my family tree on.
There seems to be a few possibilities of Michael Mullin/ Mullen - Mary ? marriages, including Mary Campbell and Mary Walsh.
Any help gratefully received.

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Meelick/Collagh/742202

Have you checked the church records for 1) Norah's marriage and 2) baptism to see if you can find her mother's maiden name? (most marriages take place in the bride's church)

Hello,

Michael Mullin and Mary Campbell have a daughter Honoria baptised in 1875 - birthplace Ballyhaunis.
Perhaps one to consider.

Thanks for the replies.
Norah's marriage, from record on roots Ireland, was at the Chapel of Castlebar 14/11/1897 and strangely the denomination is Church of Ireland although the census records them as RC. I have searched for a record of Norah's birth 1877 and marriage in the Meelick record on NLI with no result.
The Mullen-Walsh marriage produced a raft of offspring in Collagh including an Honor Mullen born 01/11/1868, so right area but the date is adrift. The Mullin -Campbell couple have a raft of kids in the Knock area. From the two census in Meelick Jane Mullen is recorded as daughter, however being born in about 1892 could she have been illegitimate and taken on by her grandparents? It looks like a Michael Mullin had a daughter Jane born 1892 in the Knock area.

I'm confused by the Church Of Ireland marriage record for John and Norah.  John and his siblings were baptised in the Aglish RC parish.  John's parents William McLoughlin and Mary Heston are also recorded as being married in Chapel of Castlebar (Castlebar no.1 district) 12/02/1872 C.O.I,  but are RC on the census.
Where was Chapel of Castlebar and why would Catholics marry at the COI?

Mariages usually take place in the bride's church.

The Mullin family at Meelick are also recorded as Catholic. Norah was working and living at the Castlebar Asylum, maybe she had to return to work the next day?
I have a copy of John and Norah's son Patrick McLoughlin marriage cert which confirms his father was a printer Journeyman as per his parents marriage record. Patrick was living with his grandmother Mary Mullen on the 1911 census.

* I lean toward the Michael born in 1858 as Irish naming patterns show his 2nd daughter to be Honor.

for Mary Corcoran again I have 2;

Mary Corcoran

county: Galway
father: Michael Corcoran
mother: Judith Corcoran
or
Mary Corcoran
bap 16 March 1854
parish: Dunmore

address: Caramanagh
father: Michael Corcoran
mother: Eliza Roctigan
* I lean towards the 2nd one as again with naming patterns Michael & Mary's 1st daughter is Eliza.I have also seen the mother's surname spelt Rochtigan.I looked at their marriage and Eliza's surname is Rattigan.
Hope this helps, Kim

Hi Kim,

That family are in 1901 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Dunmore/Drumbane/1398760/

Jonno12 has the Mullin family in Meelick in the same census.
