Hi GrannyM, He died in December 1877 and in May 1878 when his son James Henry was born it has that his age as 42yrs!! No Mention of him being deceased.

Most of those ages and dates point to a birth around 1836?

If he had been 24 years in Victoria that means he arrived about 1853, and so should be on the English censuses of 1841 and 1851.

If he arrived in 1853 his age would be around 17, so may have travelled on his own or with his family?

(Just trying to get the dates as straight as possible - James Johnson is a very common name)
