I seem to remember that on some censues the number of births is recorded but can not remember seeing anything to make be think that Thomas & Emma lost any children.

Why is it that Findmypast has these records but not Ancestry?

Edit. Yes Rosie I am sure that one is correct

Sorry, you've lost me again.

Thomas and Emma were in Greenham place in 1881 census
The baby Percy who you were asking about who was born 1882 and died 1884 - burial record says he was of Greenham Place.

Where does Eton or not Eton come into it?

Thomas and Emma had an older child George H, he was 7 in 1881. He can be seen with them in 1891. In 1901 he is married and has two sons George Edward Thomas and Percy. Percy was born 1898.
These boys fought in WW1.

Cannot see a problem!

Thankyou Liz  :) You seem to have cracked it. Although, I think that  the record that I saw only mentioned Eton. Grenham place is in Windsor
Greenham Place would fit perfectly your theory perfectly

1911 census gives details of number of children living and died within a current marriage.
Emma (if she is still alive in 1911) was already widowed. Thomas died 1909.

SOMETIMES   the 1911   census   does have   the  children  living/ dying   info   even though the  woman is widowed ,    though  usually  crossed  out  by the enumerator   the  info  still  can be  read    Emma  dies  in 1917     according to the  probate  records on Ancestry ,  so  looking  her  up on 1911  may   prove   useful

Liz, Sorry about the confusion. Because I had it in mind that one of Georges children was born in Slough (part of which is Eton
I forgot my post 'According to Findmypast, there was  an Oliver Percy Kirtland who was b 1882 and d. 1884 at Clewer, Windsor' I suppose that I have not known  this sibling for so long I was fixated on Georges children

Thanks for that Jan I think I have already seen the probate record. One thing I am a bit puzzled about is that a late uncle told me that Thomas was kicked in the knee by a horse and died in Windsor Hospital because of infection. He seems to be recorded as dyingx at The Coach & Horses which I think was his home. His father started The Coach and Horses in Oxford Road seems to have died in Bexly while he was living with his daughter and son in law..

I cant seem to find the Emma that is the now focus of this post in the 1911 census . She died in 1919. I am not sure were
There was an Emma Kirtland living with Edgar Thomas Kirtland at Hedgegroft Lodge at Walton-on-the-Hill in early 1919. I am wondering if she might have moved from Windsor to a family relation before she died?

I'm probably getting confused now - but there is an Emma (transcribed KERTLAND) at 6 Oxford Rd in 1911. She is a Grocer & Fruiterer, born Cookham, Berks.
