Fermoy barracks during the Famine
« on: Sunday 30 August 15 11:39 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have information on the role of the army garrisoned at Fermoy during the Irish Famine?
Is there a relevant website you think may be worth looking at?  Thanks.

Accounts show that in the case of evictions the police may be in attendance rather than the army. You could try and find a historical records of regiments serving in Fermoy at the time. The 6th Regiment for example were in Fermoy in 1848.

I have seen regimental histories giving details of when they were 'assisting the civil powers'. But that was during elections. When things got a little heated.

Thanks so much for this Ken.

I had the impression from a comment in one Famine history that in some towns, when 'law and order' was threatened, army detachments were brought in to assist the police. How they assisted and if at all they did so in Fermoy I don't know. I will look into the 8th Regiment history for Fermoy.

Again thanks for your input :)

6th Regiment was in Fermoy. If things got out of hand the magistrate could call out the local Militia.

Thanks again Ken. This all helps.

Do you by chance know if any South Cork Light Infantry regimental photographs have survived from the last quarter of the 1800's? I'm not very hopeful but thought I would ask anyway.
