occupation
« on: Monday 31 August 15 10:55 BST (UK) »
Hi rootschatters

I have just found a death cert for my 4th Great Grandfather in 1879, and on this, it states that his fathers occupation was "Private 46th Fleet"

I can find anything on the internet that gives an explanation of what this was.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks

The foot regiments were infantry. They fought (and marched) on foot.

What name are you looking for? FindMyPast would be a good place to start.

The second link you sent is great, as it breaks down all of the places where the 46th foot were posted, however, my 5 x gr grandfather was born in 1787 and died 1879, however, for dates after my grandfather wwas born, the regiment were not based in the uk!?

So i wonder how he came to join this?

Thanks
