Old parish records - William Osburn in 1787
« on: Monday 31 August 15 10:59 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters

I have managed to find the old parish record for the birth of my 5 x Great Grandfather, William Osburn in 1787, Doun/Dean, Kilmadock.

On the record his parents are Robert Osburn & Jean Carsal

However, i have tried to go further back to find the OPR for Robert & Jeans marraige, but cant find anything.

Is it possible that they never married at all??

Help!  :-\

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

My thought is that it just wasn't recorded or if it was..........records lost, damaged etc.

Hi

There is the following marriage that is a possible

Robert Osburn & Jean Carswell 7th May 1775 Barony, Lanarkshire
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTTG-22W

This couple look to have had several children christened in Barony between 1776 and 1784. There are 2 other christenings in Kilmadock that look to be the same family

James Osburn 27th Dec 1789 father Robert, mother Jean Carseuill
James Osburn 10th August 1791 father Robert, mother Jean Carseuell

It might be worth checking the Kilmadock Registers themselves.

Andy

Hello

Thank you for your quick reply.

I have looked at both these families on IGI but the reason i was pout off the trail, as the Jean "carsal" already named two of her children Robert in Kilmadock, and then the "Jean Carswell" in barony also has a son called robert.

However, when looking on Scotlands People, there was only one OPR marraige between Robert Osburn & Jean, and it was Carswell....

Paul,

Names were the spelling of whoever wrote the details down so you need to allow for variants  ;)

Only 1 marriage is a "plus" for those names though  :P

Hi

I can't see the birth of a Robert in Kilmadock, there are two James. 1789 and 1791 but it is not uncommon if a child dies young for another birth to be given the same name. You need to look at the Registers themselves and make your own mind up re the transcriptions of the mothers surname.

the reason i was pout off the trail, as the Jean "carsal" already named two of her children Robert in Kilmadock, and then the "Jean Carswell" in barony also has a son called robert.

Don't be put off by that. It's not unusual for infants to die, and for the next child to be given the same name as the older child who has died.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
