Thomas Walker, Chester & Shrewsbury
« on: Monday 31 August 15 22:34 BST (UK) »
Looking for any info on Thomas Walker born c.1809 in Scotland. Was tobacconist in Shrewsbury in 1840 but seedsman in 1841 census there. Moved (moved back?) to Chester shortly after to take over the business of G. Walker (presumably a relation). Also trying to establish a relationship to a J. Walker, tobacco pipemaker, possibly in Shrewsbury. Thomas married a Charlotte (born Birmingham) but where?
Any leads welcome, especially pre-1840.

Hi

Have found a marriage that looks interesting at St Phillips Birmingham, by Licence on 10 February 1834

Thomas WALKER of the Parish of BANFF, North Britain, a bachelor and
Charlotte WARWICK of this Parish a spinster.

Both signed register
Witnesses: Eliza Warwick, Mary Anne Beilby and Thomas Warwick.

Could they have moved to Shrewsbury as soon as they married - or within 9 months of marrying ??

The Thomas I am trying to trace sold his business in Shrewsbury in June 1835. Thomas and Charlotte were tobacconists there in late 1835. I am trying to prove or otherwise that he was the same man. His occupation when he married in 1834 should have clinched it but the register doesn't give this - trying to widen the search to the rest of the family who seem to be living in Chester. The buyer of his business may also have worked in Chester so everything looks promising but I don't have the one piece of evidence that confirms the link.

Thanks for this Claire - the Birmingham papers report the marriage of Thomas "of Shrewsbury" so this is the right marriage.  :)

As you have doubt as to if you are following correct Thomas Walker:

With Thomas Walker, seedsman, at Northgate Street in the 1851 census is a “nephew” John Warwick aged 7 born Shrewsbury

John Warwick was christened at St Chads, Shrewsbury in January 1843, born 20th December 1842, the son of William (and Margaret Elizabeth) Warwick, tobacconist of Market Street.

A William Warwick aged 26 engraver of Market Street, was buried at St Chads, Shrewsbury on 17th March 1843.

The marriage of William Warwick and Margaret Elizabeth George was registered at Great Boughton, Cheshire March 1842

Although it is possible/probable that young John Warwick was not a relative but more an unfortunate child they knew, the reference to tobacconist of Market Street, Shrewsbury would seem to be more than a coincidence

This is all very interesting. I found Thomas' wife being killed in Australia in 1857 so presumably they both emigrated.
