William Marshall?? Brick wall

I wonder if anyone can help with a brick wall. I have been searching for information on Wiliam Marshall born 1847? in Ballantrae according to the 1851 census in Wigtownshire. His parents were William Marshall and Margaret Neil.
Also the birth of his father William who died in 1876 in Wigtownshire aged 87. He may have been born in Ayrshire or Dumfriesshire!!!
This really is my brick wall so any help would be appreciated.

The boy William Marshall on the 1851 Census at Mochrum Wigtownshire who is born in Ayrshire Ballantrae is 14 years old. That would make his year of birth circa 1837?

His father William (born Wigtownshire) is recorded as being 40 and is a tinsmith.

Am I looking at the family you are trying to find info on?

Mmm- I'm looking at Freecen and Maxwellancestry's transcriptions where in 1851 William is 14.

Yet 10 years later in 1861 he is 13 and born in Mochrum 

Wonder if the 1851 has been mistranscribed? I take it you have looked at the original Census record Auchencrieff?

Father William has gained 19 years in 10 

In 1861 he's down as 59 - a pauper tinsmith - born Caerlaverock Dumfrieshire.

Like to trick us our ancestors don't they with all the age and place of birth changes!

Yes that is the family. I obviously wrote down the wrong date at the time. My apologies as it is a wee while since I double checked the record.
They appear on the 1861 census in Port William, Wigtownshire, aged 13 and 40 respectively, however the place of birth differs. It seems that William was 40 for over 10 years or else the enumerator found him hard to understand.
I have not been able to find any other information on them until William's death in 1876.

Do you have the death cert of William Marshall snr? Does it have any note of his parents names?

Sorry I was away during some housework when my phone pinged a message. William Died on 13 Dec 1876, age 87, at Port William, the informant was Margaret his wife and his parents were William Marshall and Elizabeth Gibson who were married in Newton on Ayr 18 April 1800.
I found a William on the 1891 census in Kirkinner, age 44 working as aFarm Servant but born in Mochrum so not sure if this is my William. There are so many William's which certainly doesn't help.
If you can suggest anything I would really appreciate all the help I can get.

Don't worry about nor replying right away Auchencrieff.
I've got to go out but I'll have a wee look later.
William Marshall is a fairly common name and as you will probably know the Marshall name in the south west of Scotland has strong "travelling" links.

It could be that the family and William jnr. just forgot he'd been born in Ballantrae and because they lived in Mochrum that became his place of birth.

But I'll have a look later when I have more time and see what we can come up with

Do you think young William Marshall could have gone to England.

Looks good for William from Ballantrae doesn't it ?
