Hi JM
I have just gone through my wife's Certificates of Marriage and I find that the marriage of John Whelan is with Bridget Joyce a Widow on the 12/7/1852 Kapunda but I know for sure that her maiden name was Brennan
Certificate Bridget Brennan married Patrick Joyce 18/3/1840 Oughaval South Mayo
does not say she was a widow as i would expect it to say if she had married in 1837 to this John Fitzmaurice.
Going by what my wife has written in her records is that John Whelan died 5/10/1856 in kapunda by drowning in the river light and is buried 7/10/1856 On the Hill St. John's Catholic Cemetery as is his son Thomas  Kapunda but do not have a certificate for his death.

Did go to the Trove sight but was warned to go off it otherwise my computer was at risk and yet I have been to Trove before and had no trouble will try again later.

Hi Sue
Yes I had seen a couple of those snipets specially the death of Patrick joyce and the relief for Bridget the others I will have to work on
The one where Patrick was not responsible for Bridget's debts has me intrigued.

Thank you for that.

Colin

The Biographical Index of South Australia does not offer much on the couple ( and it is not always accurate), but I do see this-

JOYCE, Patrick. Arrived by 1846.
Lived at Adelaide, Magill and Kapunda.
Religion RC. Married Bridget nee BRENNAN.
Children
Michael 1846-
Catherine 1850-
John 1851-

So it would appear that the estrangement of 1848 was short-lived.

Hi Sue
Yes the things we find out when researching and it sometimes is disbelieving until everything comes together.
My wife had all those children and knowing that Patrick Joyce died in 1852 i myself was a little taken back with his add in the paper.
Stranger things have happened even in my own family I found out that one of my distant uncles had cut his throat and I have been told not to go back
into the past as you may find something you don't like.
Thanks again

Colin
