Timothy(Thimotheus) Kerrisk Ireland to Bermuda 1850.
« on: Wednesday 02 September 15 09:10 BST (UK) »
 Hi All,

Just been reading that interesting thread on Bermuda Hulks in 1840.
Very educational.

I have a separate query.

A gggrandpa of mine went from Ireland to Bermuda as a prison warder.

His name Timothy Kerrisk. born about 1828.
I have never been able to find records for his service there. I did find him on a ship that was transporting prisoners back to England, so I know that he was truly in the Prison Service.
That was on UK Archives.

He stayed on the island and became a tailor. Had family.

I have some history of the family but do not know where he came from or who his parents were.
I am guessing Andrew Kerrisk as father from Castleisland but it IS a guess.

A will left by him, names a niece living in Castleisland Kerry in 1890.

Does anyone know how to find out where those records of his service would be held? or what they would be called.
He was 17 when he went there and I am hoping his parents or residence in Ireland might be on his application to join.

Hoping someone knows something about this too!!   ;D ;D ;D

lyndo

Presumably you have seen all the mentions of him in the Royal Gazette?

His was the first marriage in a Roman Catholic church in Bermuda: http://bnl.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/compoundobject/collection/BermudaNP02/id/13504/rec/1

No mention of his father though

  Oh wow!!
Thanks for the heads up on the Gazette ShaunJ.

And to think I thought it must be a terrible dump to live in at the time.
Thriving little community there according to the paper.

I am very pleased to have the confirmation of the marriage in the church, and the family names.
Next I will be hunting those Olives in Dublin.!!

I will be reading those Gazettes til I know all about the place.

My cousins gave up searching years ago because it all seemed so hard.
One of them was even going to go over there to find out more.
Then we found out it has limited visitors and other stuff. Time limits - has no water of its own except rain.

Thanks for the thread.  I read those Kerrisk posts.
I saw that there was some question about the parents names and I had dates wrong.

Probably all related and I will follow them up.

Thanks for this

There are even advertisements of the tailor shop giving its location.

Now to a map.

I don't care if I never find anything else.
This has all the births and everything.

Thanks a lot mate

I've been to Hamilton, Bermuda several times so let me know if you need any help with finding locations. ( I  had a picture published in the Royal Gazette when I was there a few years ago http://www.royalgazette.com/article/20120809/NEWS/708099989).

Excellent photo.
Amazing to see something like that. Imagine being on a hulk when one of them came past!!

I rang my cousin about that other post. She never found the record for that blokes application she posted about.
Anyway she said they went to Ireland and saw the place Castleisland and has some photos.

Apparently they went in some shop in Killarney and the man in there knew where to send them to see some of the Kerrisk things.

We are meeting up for me to see the new bits she found.

I feel really pleased that I put the post on here Shaun. That Gazette being online that you found is like gold nuggets to me.

I learnt about the potato famine today and how terrible that was, so now I have some context to him being away from home so young.

cheers
