INDIA: Cochrane family in Bombay
« on: Friday 04 September 15 12:09 BST (UK) »
I have Charles Edward Cochrane born in Bombay 1866, registered in UK 1867. I then don't have him in UK records at all until 1890 when he graduated from the University of Glasgow. He doesn't appear (I think! have been proved wrong by alert RootsChatters before!) in any UK censuses until 1901, when he was practising in Wales -- still there in 1911 -- died 1917. How do I go about tracing him and his parents in India? I imagine his father would have been either in the army or colonial service.

That would be a bit odd. Are you sure the birth was registered in the UK?

To be honest, no, I am not sure. Someone told me this. Just double-checked their email (which gave me the info about the U of Glasgow) but they do not say where they got this bit about the birth being registered in the UK in 1867. I can't find it I must say. Ignore it!

There's a baptism at Christ Church, Byculla, Bombay on 8th March 1867.

Born 20th October 1867 ( they must mean 1866)
Charles Edward Cochrane (or Cockrane), son of Thomas & Susan. Thomas is a superintendent of BB & CI (? difficult to read) Railway

Possibly they have looked at the GRO index and seen that the birth of a Charles Edward Cochrane was registered in Wolverhampton in the 4th quarter of 1867 and assumed it was the same person?

There is a Charles Cochrane, unmarried, medical student, aged 24, in Edinburgh in 1891.
Slight fly in the ointment - his birthplace is said to be England  :-\
