School in Westmorland 1700's
« on: Friday 04 September 15 18:56 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Does anyone know of the Strickland family history in Westmorland? I am looking details on the school ran by Mrs Strickland.
On tracing the family line i have some information from one of the relatives in her memoirs.
"Memoirs of Mrs Mary Tatham, late of Nottingham"
she mentioned " My father Robert the youngest of 3 his father & mother were both the immediate descendents of families of considerable note. My grandfather & grandmother Strickland lived upon their own estate in Westmoreland.  Also that her grandmother had a school in Westmoreland from dates in the memoirs the school was open from at least 1767-1789.
There are these baptisms
John Strickland bap 17/4/1726 Witherslack Westmorland father John Strickland
Daniel Strickland bap 29/12/1730 as above
Robert Strickland bap 29/5/1732 as above
She mentions an uncle Daniel & her father marrying her mother in London
Robert Strickland of Nottingham M Mary Palmer 23/5/1763 St Olave Bermondsey
So i am happy that this is her family

John Strickland born Witherslack M Mary Shutters 6/2/1724 Beetham
These i presume are her Grandparents who lived on their estate in Westmorland.

Hope someone can help.
Jackie

Sizergh Castle near Kendal has been the seat of the Strickland family since the late 13th century. I visited recently and remember that there was a large family tree in one of the rooms. The castle is in the care of the National Trust but members of the family still live there.

The archives in Kemdal may have information on the Stricklands you are interested in.

You might find this an interesting read as Stricklands in Witherslack are mentioned

www.british-history.ac.uk/kendale-barony/vol2/pp247-265
In 1196 Witherslack was probably a member of the demesne lands of the barony ... It descended to John, son of Roger de Lancastre and was held by Annora, relict ..... 1542 Anthony Roose and Ellen his wife passed by fine to Walter Strickland, ...

Thank you Gibel,
I will try the Kendal archives, the NT website didn't have much information.
The other link you gave was very interesting though it seems to only go up to 1782.
I hope you enjoyed the tour of the castle?
