Special offer on Campbell's
« on: Monday 07 September 15 11:28 BST (UK) »
Are you tired of a tree full of boring Smiths and Jones!!
Do you want to have interesting historical events associated with your ancestors!!
Do you want to acquire a slightly dodgy reputation!!
Tired of being normal!!

For one week only I am running a special offer, Adopt a Campbell for your family tree !!!!!
And for this week only as an introductory offer its buy one get seven free !!! Could you ask for more!!

And now on a more serious note I am trying to find the origins and ages for eight Campbell's who were involved in a maritime tragedy on September the 28th 1853. http://www.anniejane.net/passengers/steerage-passengers-drowned/
Here are their names, they may be from one family or possibly not, and any young children may not be mentioned on the passenger list as they travelled for free sharing their parents berth's.
•John Campbell (1)
•John Campbell (2)
•Ann Campbell
•Mary Campbell
•James Campbell
•Anne E Campbell
•Johanna Campbell
•William Campbell

So missing a branch of your family tree? This could be them.

Thanks for any help in advance.
Allan

Obviously the problem with this search is the common names. As you don't know if they are all members of one family, nor are ages or places of origin listed, then I'm not sure how to begin to search for them.
Whereabouts in the world did the shipwreck occur?
The link just gives a list of names - what is the source of this list and is there further information provided on an original document? (ages would help greatly)
I looked at the 1851 Scottish census, selected the least common name Jo*anna Campbell, and have 26 results.
Sorry I couldn't help.  :-\

There is this family in Glasgow in 1851:
John Campbell  48
 Ann Campbell  44
 Joanna Campbell  20
 Agness Campbell  18
 Christina Campbell  9
 Mary Campbell  4

Names are not the same as on the list - (clutching at straws and wondering in Agness might be Ann?  :-\)

Hello Ruskie

This unfortunately is turning into a mission impossible, but that doesn't mean it should not be attempted. Here is the link to the website http://www.anniejane.net/ It was a shipwreck on the island of Vatersay in the Hebrides in which approx. 350 emigrants drowned. The casualty list is one I have cobbled together from various sources but that all there is, any ages I have acquired from the few obituaries and results from my searches on roots chat.
Thanks for trying its not a bad fit, do they exist in the 1861 Census?

Regards Allan

That I haven't yet checked Alan.

I am signing off now but will check tomorrow if no one beats me to it.  :)

Allan, that John Campbell Snr that Ruskie mentions in 1851 with family shows as a 'Journeyman Sailor' which could connect, maybe, expect that on the a/try transcript Tailor is often shown as Sailor...(just checked on FreeCen, which is very much more accurate most of the time,  and this transcribes him a a Journeyman Tailor.

Ann/Agnes could be the same. Allan, first name variants in Scotland were very common, see this site for them, www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=ann

Thanks Monica

All the surnames on the list have been lumped together and it could be two family groups. So that looks very promising. The proof will be, where are they in the 1861 census?

This looks like the above family in Glasgow in 1861:
John Campbell  58 Tailor and Clothier
 Joan K Campbell  25
 Christina Campbell  17
 Mary Campbell  14
(unsure where "Joan" fits in - I thought she might have been "Joanna" but age doesn't fit)

No matter - it doesn't look like this is the right family anyway ....  :(
