Anne Gentle, 25 b Littlington Cambs, is boarding in Luton in 1861.

Piece 1014/66/51.

She is boarding with Alfred Crofts/Croft and family, wife Naomi, sister Eliza, and a nephew, all from the London area
Luton also has some Puddephats, athough I don't see a connection
That Crofts family can certainly be found in the later census returns, living in the south London area. Alfred would appear to be Alfred Boyle Crofts (died Southwark 1906)

Sorry, crazy idea here -
I can sort of see some kind of resemblance between Alfred Crofts and Alfred Puddephat! Is it possible that Ann was later Mr Crofts "other" wife or mistress? And it was all disguised by using the name Puddephat (perhaps Alfred might have across some of them in Luton, and decided it would be a jolly idea to use the name)
It would mean however that Alfred was enumerated living in two different places both in 1871 and 1881, but maybe Ann was determined to put down that she had a husband living with her. Could she do that? But since she had all those children, he might have been with her more than with Naomi! Are there birth registrations for all or most of them? I mean, are you sure when Mr Puddephat first appeared?

1861 Alfred Croft(s) is a dealer in foreign...., born Chelsea circa 1825 (sister was born Kennington)
1871-91 he is a Clerk / Solicitor's Clerk, born Lambeth/Kennington, circa 1825/6. Living in the Lambeth area.

Also is it slightly odd that Alfred Puddephat was a traveller on the census returns, but a lawyers clerk on the double baptism? But the clerk occupation does fit Alfred Crofts.
It might also perhaps explain the lack of a death record for Alfred Puddephat. Surely he must have died under some other name anyway.
Against all that, don't know when the Crofts left Luton. Daughter Augusta was registered March 1871 Camberwell, no other children are listed with them.

Age is very off (maybe a transcription issue?), but could someone check out "A Phuddephatt" from Brixton who is in Somerset in 1891?
