Looking for Elizabeth Taylor in 1901
« on: Monday 07 September 15 16:00 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Elizabeth Taylor was born 30 Nov 1871 in Speke, Lancashire.  She was baptised at the Church of St Mary, Hale, Lancashire on 14 Jan 1872.  Her parents were William and Margaret Taylor (formerly Markey).  William's occupation was labourer.

I have found her in 1881 and 1891 but am unable to locate her in 1901 (or 1911 but I know I am unable to ask for 1911 look ups).

1881 - RG11/3720 - 46 Cottage, Speke
1891 - RG12/3007 - Hale Cliff

Can anyone see her in 1901 please.

I don't think she ever married and possibly she died 2nd qtr 1933 but this is unconfirmed.

She may have had an illegitimate son, Samuel Taylor who was born in 18 Dec 1893.  His baptism on 11 Mar 1894 gives his parents as Samuel and Elizabeth Taylor, however, I can't find any evidence that William Taylor and Margaret Ann Markey has a son called Samuel.

Samuel on the 1911 census recorded as the nephew of William and Margaret Leadbetter (Margaret was Elizabeth Taylor's older sister) and in 1901 he was a visitor in the household of Mary Taylor (who is the widow of Elizabeth Taylor's oldest brother, John Taylor).

Can anyone help please?  I suspect if I order Samuel Taylor's birth certificate, his father's name will be Samuel Taylor as per the baptism record.

Falkner St was the 'Liverpool Female Penitentiary'
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/rd/1b252ab8-5bb2-4574-a10c-f512bc5aaa3a

Described in varous articles on google search as caring for 'fallen women,' so I suppose having an illegitimate child in those days would qualify someone to be there.

Oh!
1809, the Female Penitentiary opened on Falkner St, the same one where Elizabeth was in 1901?

Thanks BarbaraH and GrannyM.  I wonder if that's her  ???  Seems to fit my theory of Samuel being her illegitimate son and living with various aunties.  Wasn't expecting her to be "fallen" enough to be in an institution though.

Samuel's birth was registered 1st qtr 1894 Prescot and he was baptised at St Mary's, Hale, Lancashire on 11th Mar 1894.  Child of Samuel Taylor (labourer) and Elizabeth, born 18th December 1893.

I have Elizabeth's parents (William Taylor and Margaret Ann Markey) in the census from their marriage in 1845 until they died and they didn't appear to have a son called Samuel.  Also I can't see a marriage that might fit for a Samuel Taylor to an Elizabeth so this is why I am thinking there might be a cover up here.
