Kirkpatricks of Kirkcudbright and Dumfries
« on: Tuesday 08 September 15 02:32 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on my 5th great grandparents William Kirkpatrick born 1734 supposedly in Kirkcudbright and Mary Cavan born 1741 also in Kirkcudbright. Not sure if this is correct since my 4th great grandfather Thomas was supposed to have been born in Dumfries and that is where all of his descendants to my 2nd great grandfather were born. Everything we find on William's parents list either Alexander or William Kirkpatrick and Janet Shennan and give birth dates as 1730 for him. This can't be if his son was born in 1734. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Matt

This was helpful but I am still not sure I am on the right track. Unfortunately it doesn't help tie son William to our Thomas. But it does verify dates for me.
Many of those inscriptions are interesting and seem to tie in though.

   Thanks again,
     Natalie

Hi Natalie
ScotlandsPeople website has a birth record for a Thomas Kirkpatrick, parents William Kirkpatrick and Mary Caven, at Rerrick on 18th September 1780. So not Dumfries after all. Maybe a case of not believing everything our ancestors tell us!  :)

Added
Actually, that birthdate suggests that the inscription for William (Jnr) is wrong as he can't have been only 9 years old when Thomas was born. And ScotlandsPeople states that a William Kirkpatrick was born on 7th February 1770 to William Kirkpatrick and Mary Caven, indicating the one who died in 1814 was the grandson, not the son of William and Jannet Shennan.

Ian

You may have seen my added note above. It seems William and Mary married in 1768 and they went on to have six children. SP gives no clue as to when William was born.

Re the Inscription for William that indicates that he died 20 March 1814 aged 40 years. This is partly correct.
I have just checked Vol 5 of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire Monumental Inscriptions Pre 1855
( Published by  The Scottish Genealogy Society)
Their record for this monument gives Williams death details as  30 March 1814 aged 80 years.
A difference of 40 years & 10 days which would give him a birth year of 1734.  This will make him the son & not the G/son as thought.

Some other differences are
Jannet Shennan died 19 April 1790 aged 82 years.
Son John died at Dousknow 6 April 1858 age 82 years.
Just shows errors can creep in anywhere.

Thanks for clearing that up, Matt.

But even Vol.5 of the pre-1855 MIs isn't quite consistent with what the death record for John Kirkpatrick says! The parish record states that John was a farmer and he died at Dons Knowe on 4th (not 6th) April 1858. Dons Knowe was a small house with office and land about a mile north of Orroland.
